Individual Counseling
Many children experience difficulties at one time or another for a variety of reasons. It is important for children and adolescents to know that there are people they can turn to when they experience these challenges. Students are invited to meet with the counselor one on one according to their needs. Students either self-refer or are referred by parents, teachers, or administrators.
Support Groups
Social Skills Lunch Group (Lunch Bunch)/Grades K-8
Staff members, parents and the school counselor identify students who could benefit from social skills training. The counselor selects a balanced group and the students have the opportunity to share relationship concerns and ideas for practicing interpersonal skills.
New Student Lunch Groups
After the initial Welcoming Guide Orientation, all new students are invited to join a weekly lunch group where they can share their concerns and build new friendships.
Birthday Group/Kindergarten
Each month the school counselor meets with all kindergarten students whose birthdays fall in that month. This group provides the students and counselor an opportunity to begin building rapport that will help students feel more comfortable coming to the counselor for help when needed.
Divorce Group
The school counselor meets for eight weeks with students whose parents are divorced or separated. This activity provides the students with a support group and opportunities to talk about their special life experiences.
General Support Groups
The school counselor will assemble a group, on an as needed basis, on any topic that would provide needed reassurance and support for students.
Chat Group for Girls / Positive Response Organization for Boys/Grades 6-8
These groups offer the middle school students an opportunity to explore issues dealing with character building, developing healthy, respectful relationships with peers and adults, positive decision making skills, drug and alcohol prevention, careers, and transition to middle school. This program is sponsored in partnership with the Cranbury Municipal Alliance.
Learning Through Gardening /Gr. 5
The counselor provides fifth grade students who are experiencing social/emotional challenges with the opportunity to participate in a program called “Plant Pals” which incorporates gardening as a therapeutic intervention.
The Aquaponics Program, led by gifted and talented teacher, Susan Lepardo, is a re-circulating water system that supports and grows fish and crops together. This program incorporates principles in science, technology, engineering, math and art. The aquaponics system is housed in the cafeteria. Students are responsible for the upkeep of water levels, the health of the fish and the harvesting of plants.
The Girl Scout Gold Award project, led by Lily Santoro, high school senior is currently in the works. Lily has built a Kindergarten pumpkin patch in the court yard outside of the first grade classes. Kindergarteners planted pumpkin seeds and watched their plants sprout at the end of the school year. The plants were transplanted into the pumpkin patch. Two garden beds have been installed in the courtyard outside of the cafeteria. Fifth grade students planted lettuce this fall!
